(From Real People Who Get It)
Emotional dysregulation hits hard when you have ADHD or AuDHD. Stats show it affects 1 in 2 adults and 1 in 3 children with ADHD – yet it’s still not a formal diagnostic criterion. It can feel like your nervous system is hijacked, and the usual “just take a deep breath” advice falls flat.
I’ve been there (especially pre-diagnosis when I was just clueless about what was going on with me). When the overwhelm builds, I need tools that actually work in the moment.
A recent Facebook post by Cherry ADHD nailed it by asking for real unhinged hacks – not polite ones.

Here’s what the community shared (plus my own notes):
1. Secret Hand Signals & Morse Code Rage
- Fingerspelling “f**k you” aimed at the trigger (looks like stimming – genius stealth mode).
- Tapping curse words in Morse code while mentally destroying the problem.
I notice these give that quick dopamine hit of expression without escalation. Harmless rebellion FTW 😉 (I *may* have thrown up a secret double middle finger a time or two!)
2. Rage Cleaning + Music (The Original Post’s Hack)
- Go quiet, blast music (or water sounds for grounding), and clean like your life depends on it. The sensory input + sense of control is powerful.
- This one resonates with my morning routine walks and high-protein structure… movement + music = regulation.

3. Physical Release That Looks Wild
- Sledgehammer on cement slabs in the backyard while screaming (RIP neighbors 😂).
- Chopping wood (excellent biceps bonus, plus an amazing supply of firewood).
- Sensory showers: dark room, candle, music, aromatherapy, then full-body shaking + hot-to-cold water for a serotonin surge.
- Jumping, somatic shaking, butterfly taps, ear pulls, or cold water on the face to reset the vagus nerve.
4. Creative & Sensory Outlets
- Eating something extremely sour (spoon of lemon juice resets the nervous system).
- Burying your face in your dog’s fur for instant unconditional acceptance.
- Singing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” with the longest, loudest “a-weema-weh” possible (vagus nerve stimulator).
- Making up songs or mouth noises about whatever is frustrating you.

5. Verbal & Mindful Resets
- Verbally narrating what you’re noticing (“I’m getting overwhelmed right now”) to create space.
- Saying out loud “I am choosing to breathe slowly” then doing it.
- Begging the other person for a minute before you “act a fool.”
What I’m Adding from My Own Toolkit
- L-Tyrosine + L-Theanine with my morning coffee for better dopamine baseline (I notice fewer spikes).
- My strict 4:30am routine + 5km dawn walk in my LED gear – prevents a lot of buildup.
- Retatrutide helping with the food noise/binge side of emotional eating.
- Lion’s Mane, NAC, and Magnesium Threonate in my daily stack for nervous system support.
