(You Can Copy This Routine Too!)
Mornings are important, but evenings are where I protect my sleep, recovery, and sanity. With ADHD, winding down used to be a real struggle. My brain would race, I’d doom-scroll, and I’d still be wired at midnight.
After a lot of trial and error, I’ve built a realistic evening wind-down routine that actually works for my busy life (full-time job, family, dogs, and life responsibilities). It’s not perfect every night, but it’s consistent enough to make a big difference.
Here’s exactly what I do:

Why a Good Evening Routine Matters with ADHD
A solid wind-down helps:
- Lower cortisol from the day
- Reduce decision fatigue
- Calm a racing mind
- Improve sleep quality (which makes mornings so much better)
My Realistic Evening Wind-Down Routine
Total time: About 45–75 minutes (flexible)
1. Screen Curfew (1 hour before bed)
I put my phone on Do Not Disturb and avoid bright screens. If I need to use my phone, I use Night Shift + blue light blocking glasses.
2. Light Nourishment & Supplements
- Magnesium Bisglycinate (my evening staple for calm and sleep)
- Sometimes a small high-protein snack if I’m hungry (helps stabilize blood sugar)
- Herbal tea (chamomile, lemon balm, or tulsi)
3. Body & Mind Reset (10–15 minutes)
- Quick shower or wash face
- Gentle stretching or foam rolling
- Brux night guard in (I started using this consistently this year)
4. Brain Dump & Planning
I spend 5 minutes journaling:
- 3 things I’m grateful for
- Brain dump of tomorrow’s tasks (so they stop spinning in my head)
- Quick review of what went well today
5. Reading or Calm Content
I read a physical book or listen to a low-key podcast/audiobook (nothing too stimulating).
6. Lights Out Routine
- Consistent bedtime (I aim for the same window most nights)
- White noise or fan for sound
- On a tough night, I’ll put on a sleep frequency video from YouTube
- Room as dark and cool as possible
My Honest Results
Since making this routine more consistent:
- Falling asleep faster
- Fewer middle-of-the-night wake-ups
- Better morning energy and mood
- Less next-day overwhelm and ADHD paralysis
It’s not magical, but it compounds.
Tips for ADHD Brains
- Keep it simple – start with just 2–3 steps
- Make it enjoyable (nice pajamas, favorite tea, etc.)
- Use visual cues (same spot for your journal, etc.)
- Be kind to yourself on off nights. Consistency > perfection
